"Road To One America Tour" - Memphis

Just a quick post with brief remarks about the Tour stop in Memphis yesterday evening.

The weather here was hot, and humid, but no rain. The crowd was gathered early to get into Memphis Inter Faith Association (MIFA). Finally, when we moved into the speaking area - it was elbow to elbow, standing room only with over flow into the front lobby area.

The choir from the First Baptist Church at 2835 Broad Avenue, Memphis soon gave a memorable performance. First Baptist Pastor Keith Norman  was recently elected the Chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party and was present to hear John Edwards.

Several from the Shelby County Executive Committee were present, along with local political activist, bloggers and the Memphis Flyer's  Jackson Baker . A very special mention goes out to the Memphis OneCorp group's Captain Steve, and members for all they did to help the evening be great for all present.

At the begining of the program, a MIFA spokeswomen introduced 3 local Memphians that have been working their way to a better life, lifting themselves out of poverty with help from programs that MIFA has available. All three stories were a powerful testimony to the need for Poverty in America to be addressed and to have it done now, not wait another year, another month, another day, another second.

The First speaker, a single mom, who is now working, and has been successful in her goals now for over a year. Her son was present and later John Edwards had him come to the stage also. A light hearted moment as the young gentleman was wearing a North Carolina Jersey, which John Edwards made mention of as a favorite.

The Second speaker, a single mother of 7, who had lost one son and gave a moving account of enduring the loss, and having a deep understanding of seeing someone homeless on the street as she remembers being homeless herself. With the help of MIFA and it's programs she spoke of understanding how those homeless on the streets, feel, and that anyone could end up homeless in a short time. It happened to her, it could happen to anyone.

The last speaker was a teenager that is helping his single parent mother. He was able to find work through another MIFA progam helping teens. He talked about MIFA's program helping him, with interviewing, resume and other important things to help him to be better prepared for the future.

Then, Senator Edwards came to the stage and talked about the importance of the programs offered by MIFA, and that America is better than this.

His talk was to the issues of our society and it's need to help those that are struggling to make it, offering guidance and a helping hand to get on solid ground.

The spot light was on the needs of our neighbors, speaking to the desparate situation of our fellow Americans.

Waiting in the lobby, I spoke to several that were very impressed with the evening, one person spoke to me of being glad they had made it to hear Senator Edwards. She said she was very impressed that "when he spoke, it wasn't all about me", "he didn't talk about himself"!

I would have to agree, it was all about, "The Road To One America".

Good report.  It's refreshing to have a candidate who truly cares about the working poor.

Agree. Edwards is out there really listening to those in poverty and putting a human face on the issue.

People in poverty have been invisible and marginalized for far too long. It's due time to lift the veil.

Leaving an event like that (3.00 / 2)

really makes you think about where this country has been headed - it is long past time for a new direction.

We need to get back to helping all americans, made in america, keeping jobs in america, raising minimum wages and making sure everyone is covered by health care.

Pitiful (3.00 / 1)

Scroll to the 2nd entry - EyeWitness News --

See - these are the people who've lost jobs, have no healthcare or no affordable healthcare - but have rightwing radio piped in 24/7 - and many of the programs aren't local, but national - Rush, O'Liely, etc. cause Clear Channel (R) bought up so many small town stations.

But look for more haircut stories cause the national media and their corporate sponsors like to keep the WORKING POOR out of sight.  Oh - and they also don't like candidates that walk picket lines with the working poor and assist in placing minimum wage on ballots - as Edwards has done.

Re: Pitiful (none / 0)

I've been seeing the right wing talk radio jocks referred to as the "neocon" talk radio jocks more and more (and with good reason) since they all appear to promote war in the Middle East above all else.

Like Edwards says - many people equate poverty with laziness - but it's the WORKING POOR!
Look for more Edwards haircut stories because the corporate media doesn't like greedy corporatists exposed.

Blue Diamond - have you been out in the sun (none / 0)

to long? Oh your so very funny, if you think it is Obama putting something out there - could you explain this: Despite Rhetoric, Obama Pushed Lobbyists' Interests
Away from the bright lights and high-minded rhetoric of the campaign trail, Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has quietly worked with corporate lobbyists to help pass breaks worth $12 million. In his speeches, Obama has lambasted lobbyists and moneyed interests who "have turned our government into a game only they can afford to play." "It's an entire culture in Washington -- some of it legal, some of it not," the Democratic hopeful told a New York crowd in June, rallying support for his ethics reform agenda. But last year, at the request of a hired representative for an Australian-owned chemical corporation Nufarm, Obama introduced nine separate bills exempting the company from import fees on a range of chemical ingredients it uses in the manufacture of pesticides and herbicides. Nufarm's U.S. subsidiary is based in Illinois. Nufarm wasn't the only beneficiary of Obama's efforts to reduce customs fees and duties. In early May of 2006, two Washington lobbyists registered to work on behalf of Astellas Pharma, a Japanese-owned drug company which also has offices in Illinois.

Congrats on the Edwards visit and thanks for the report and pics. I know you are a great Edwards supporter and it must've been great to see him in your town. Hey, Columbus is still leading in the contest, and that is only 45 miles from where I live. I expect a lot of people from Paducah will go. You'll get a report from me when it happens!!
